Appendix A

In addition to my previous post yesterday, I include Appendix A, as another example of the often confusing French language…

Within hours of my posting yesterday I was talking to my dad in my best French which is often only understood by him, and described my latest blog post and how a couple of mornings before workers were trimming a tree outside my window at 8:30h. Not knowing the proper French term for trim, as there are different words for different contexts, whether you are trimming a tree or hair…, I used coupe (cut), to which he proclaimed that he understood what I was trying to say but that coupe was not the correct word and lo and behold he could not initially remember the word for trim! As he was thinking about it, I joked that he didn’t even know French and he laughed and said, “No I do, give me three words and I can tell you the right one!”  In my father’s defence , within less than a minute and without a multiple choice selection he came up with the proper term, which of course I don’t remember, and for all intents and purposes I will use coupe to describe cutting, trimming, shearing… and all like words!
